ATTRACT BIRDS AND BEES TO YOUR GARDEN: Sowing Native Wild Flowers is a great way to attract beneficial insects and pollinators to your garden, allotment or field while also provide a food source for birds and other wildlife. Red campion flowers from May to September
HOW TO PLANT: Sow into a coldframe in autumn or early spring. Sow directly after danger of frost has passed. Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Just cover seed with a sprinkling of soil. Ideal temp. 20°C. Cold frame sowings should germinate in spring as the weather warms. Direct sowings take 2-3 weeks to germinate. Cold frame seedlings should be transplanted to 8cm pots and grown on under glass, acclimatised and planted out after danger of frost has passed. Direct sowings may be thinned if required.
TOP GROWING TIPS: Occurs naturally on well-drained, moderately fertile soils. Dislikes waterlogging so is rarely found on heavy clay. A flower of hedgerows and semi-shaded places. Seeds may need some protection from wild birds until they germinate. Keep them well watered initially and remove any weeds if they appear. Red campion will self-seed freely. Deadhead if you do not want volunteer seedlings next year.
GO BACK TO YOUR ROOTS: Planting wild flowers is a wonderful way to spend time in your garden, cultivate mindfulness and appreciate the little things just like in years gone by. Working with the earth and growing things is immensely satisfying – teach your children or grandchildren this priceless skill of harvesting food in their own gardens, allotments, greenhouses, inside the home in pots or even in community gardens!
